AC Out in a Missouri Heat Wave: First Steps to Take

When the air conditioner quits during a stretch of 95-degree afternoons, the inside of a Southwest Missouri home heats up fast — and the high humidity that comes with our summers makes it feel worse than the thermostat reads. Before you assume you need a major repair, a handful of quick checks resolve a meaningful share of no-cool calls. Just as important is knowing how to keep your household safe while you sort it out.

Here's the order a technician would work through, what each step rules out, and the clear signs that it's time to call for emergency service instead of troubleshooting further.

Heat is dangerous, and indoor temperatures can climb into the danger zone quickly for infants, older adults, and anyone with a heart or breathing condition. Before you touch the equipment, close blinds and curtains on the sunny side of the house, shut off heat-producing appliances, and move the most vulnerable people and pets to the coolest room — usually a lower-level, north-facing space. Run ceiling fans and drink water. If anyone shows signs of heat illness, that comes before any AC troubleshooting.

Confirm the thermostat is set to COOL and the target is several degrees below room temperature. Replace the batteries if the screen is dim. Then pull the air filter. A clogged filter is the most common airflow problem we find, and it can freeze the indoor coil solid — which cuts cooling entirely. If the filter is dark and packed, replace it.

A central AC has two power sources, and both have to be live.

1. At the main panel, look for a tripped breaker for the air handler and for the outdoor condenser. Reset once. If it trips again immediately, stop and call — that's an electrical fault.
2. Find the outdoor disconnect box near the condenser. Make sure the pull-out or switch is fully seated.
3. Check the furnace or air-handler switch indoors, which also powers the blower for cooling.
4. Look at the condensate safety switch. A clogged drain line can trigger a float switch that shuts the whole system down to prevent water damage.

Look and Listen at the Outdoor Unit

Walk out to the condenser. Is the fan on top spinning? If the unit is humming but the fan isn't turning, that often means a failed run capacitor — one of the most common heat-wave breakdowns and usually a same-visit fix. Clear any grass clippings, cottonwood fluff, or leaves packed against the coil; a smothered condenser can't shed heat and will struggle or shut down on a hot day.

• A blown run capacitor, leaving the compressor or fan unable to start.
• A failed contactor that won't send power to the outdoor unit.
• A frozen evaporator coil from low refrigerant or restricted airflow.
• A refrigerant leak that has slowly starved the system over the season.
• A clogged condensate drain that tripped the safety float switch.

Notice that two of those — low refrigerant and a slowly weakening system — are not do-it-yourself fixes. Refrigerant is a sealed system, so if it's low, it's leaking. Topping it off without finding the leak just pays to refill a system that will run low again, and refrigerant handling is regulated under EPA Section 608 and must be done by a certified technician.

Call right away if the breaker trips repeatedly, if the outdoor unit hums but won't run, if the coil is iced over after thawing and the problem returns, if indoor temperatures are becoming dangerous, or if you smell burning. During a heat wave, demand spikes and schedules fill fast, so calling early gets you a better window.

The fastest cooling repairs are the ones where the homeowner ruled out the filter, the breakers, and the drain first — that lets us go straight to the real fault.

Help the System While You Wait

A few things you can do lighten the load and speed up your recovery. Draw the shades on every window taking direct sun, since solar gain through glass is a huge part of a home's cooling load on a bright afternoon. Hold off on the oven, the dryer, and the dishwasher until evening, and switch ceiling fans to spin counterclockwise so they push air down and create a wind-chill effect on your skin. Cracking a window at night and running a whole-house or box fan to flush the hot air out, then closing the house up in the morning, can shave several degrees off your starting point. None of this fixes a broken AC, but it keeps a home livable and gives a repaired system a smaller hole to climb out of once cooling is restored.
